South Africa: Floods Leave About 15 Pietermaritzburg Families Destitute

At least 15 Pietermaritzburg families were left destitute after the Msunduzi River burst its banks this week.

KwaZulu Natal (KZN) MEC of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sihle Zikalala said they’ve now been moved to a local mosque at Peace Valley in ward 23.

The provincial government is now trying to find alternative accommodation, eNCA News reported. Sihle Zikalala said:

We will try to move them into a place where they will be able to live as individual families but protected.

Heavy rain on Wednesday resulted in the uMsunduzi River breaking its banks and causing extensive flooding.

According to Msunduzi mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla, the incident caused a significant amount of damage to property.

Earlier, Thebolla said 30 families, numbering 78 people, had been affected, according to IOL News.

He said that the municipality was continuing to receive reports of roads and bridges that had been blocked and, or, damaged and were, therefore, inaccessible because of mudslides, which might restrict service delivery in the area.
