South Africa: 27-year-old Zimbabwean Man Rearrested In Connection With Rape

A 27-year-old Zimbabwean man was rearrested in Tsakane, Gauteng, South Africa last week in connection with a rape he allegedly committed in Boitekong near Rustenburg in January.

It is alleged that Aubrey Zunguza who allegedly raped a woman in North West, was initially arrested and was denied bail, News24 reported.

Police spokesperson Sabata Mokgwabone said Zunguza fell sick and was admitted to Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital where he escaped on July 20, 2022, while receiving treatment.

According to The Platinum Weekly, Zunguza broke the wheelchair he was handcuffed to.

Mokgwabone said Zunguza then fled to Gauteng, where he started a new life and made a living as a hawker selling vegetables in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.

Zunguza was rearrested last by constables Thulani Tshabalala, Lawrence Malaza and Thato Moalusi from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD).

The officers were conducting an operation aimed at curbing driving while under the influence when they stopped at the fire station in Tsakane.

Malaza said an informant approached the officers and told them that he had overheard Zunguza telling some people that he had escaped from police custody in Rustenburg. Malaza added:

We spoke to the Rustenburg police, who gave us details about the suspect, including the case number and a picture of him. After gathering all the information, we began our search.

On Saturday, we went back to Tsakane to look for him, but he was not there. The informant told us he normally made rounds in that area with his trolley, selling vegetables. But I assumed he was not working that day.

The officers could not return to the location the next day because of their drunk driving operation, but they resumed the search for Zunguza on 19 September.

They did not find Zunguza since he had gone to restock his vegetables.

Malaza said he and his team returned to the area on 20 September and saw him pushing his trolley, selling veggies on Sabelo Street, near the fire station.

The police officers who were in their uniforms approached Zunguza pretending to buy vegetables but he then ran away, leaving his trolley behind.

They chased and caught him and took him to Tsakane police station and later transported him to Rustenburg.

Zunguza appeared in court on Friday on a charge of escaping from police custody. He was expected back in court on 4 October on the rape charge.
