Govt Has No Capacity To Pay USD Salaries - Mavima

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima has reiterated that the government has no capacity to pay civil servants the pre-October 2018 United States dollar salary of US$540.

He was responding to parliamentarians on Wednesday who had queried why the government was failing to address the plight of civil servants. Said Mavima:

The fiscal space is not there. You will realise that the government has been continuously negotiating with civil servants.

At the moment, their salaries are paid in Zimbabwean dollars and we have been periodically reviewing these salaries in our currency.

Reference to the 2018 salaries is misplaced. What we have to look at is do we have the capacity to pay the teachers.

There are currently intensive consultations with all representatives of civil servants and unions have been coming to the table for negotiations.

I have already held a meeting and I have also called for a meeting next Monday so that we can start this issue.

Meanwhile, a two-day strike called by labour unions representing public service workers flopped on Wednesday as most teachers and health workers reported for duty.

Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU), formerly known as the Apex Council, deputy team leader Goodwill Taderera said they will give a full update of the state of the strike this Thursday after compiling reports from different parts of the country.

Zimbabwe Professional Nurses Union (ZPNU) secretary-general Douglas Chikobvu told NewsDay that their members reported for duty yesterday.
