Ecocash Holdings Discontinue Waste Collection Services Citing Harare & Geo Pomona's Project

Ecocash Holdings, which is part of Econet Group, owned by telecoms mogul, Strive Masiyiwa has announced the suspension of waste collection services saying it was difficult to operate due to the Harare City Council (HCC) and Geo Pomona Waste Management (Private) Limited’s waste to energy project.

The City of Harare concluded a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) Joint Venture Agreement with Geogenix B.V. on the 9th of March 2022, with a contractual lifespan of thirty (30) years.

Critics say the contract is a bad one which will inevitably fail. If it works, Geo Pomona Waste Management (Private) Limited, fronted by Dylish Nguwaya, will be paid for all the waste Harare will dispose of at Pomona.

If Harare fails to dispose of enough waste, it will be fined while cancellation of the contract will see Nguwaya’s company walking away with over US$3 million dollars.

It is against this background that Ecocash Holdings is suspending its services. A public notice gleaned by Pindula News reads:

Suspension of Waste Collection Services

The public is advised that we have suspended our waste management and waste disposal services in Harare with effect from 25 May 2022.

The recent change in the terms Pomona Waste Facilities have left the household and the corporate clients that we serve unable to afford the service. In turn, this has impacted the viability of our waste disposal business.

The company will update the public and its valued clients of any further developments.

Ecocash Holdings’ Clean City initiative was supposed to be for free or paid for by the City of Harare out of refuse part of rates.

They basically did collections in place of the local government authority.

They, of late, have been just collecting privately for individual payers, but they suddenly have nowhere they can afford to dump what they collect since Pomona is now under the care of Geo Pomona Waste Management (Private) Limited.
