ZESA Concerned As Number Of Electricity-related Accidents Increase

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has expressed concern over the increase in the number of deaths related to electricity.

This came out at a stakeholders’ engagement meeting underway in Masvingo, Gutu, Birchenough, Bikita and Zaka.

Speaking at the event, Eng. Victor Sibanda who was presenting on energy efficiency, public safety and alternative and renewable forms of energy said 12 people had died in 2022 as of April. Said Eng. Sibanda:

We are worried by the increasing electricity related accidents, this year alone 12 people have lost their lives as a result of these accidents.

He said the major causes of the accidents were:

a). Theft and Vandalism of electricity infrastructure contributed 12 per cent of total accidents.

b). Infrastructure collapse which contributed 31 per cent.

c). Unsafe operations by employees contributed 24 per cent.

d). Unsafe or practices operations by the public has the highest share with 33 per cent.

The stakeholder engagement and advisory meetings are designed for ZESA to engage with energy consumers on their rights and responsible, safe and sustainable use of energy products.

The authority has the mandate to regulate the procurement, production, transportation, transmission, distribution, importation and exportation of energy derived from any energy source.
