JOC Seizes Council Prado From Recalled Gweru Mayor

The Joint Operations Command (JOC) has seized a luxurious US$170 000 council Prado vehicle that former Gweru City Mayor Josiah Makombe (MDC Alliance) had been clinging to since he was recalled from office in 2021.

The vehicle was impounded by JOC, a security arm comprising of officers drawn from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS).

Gweru District Development Coordinator (DDC) Ndeya Nyede confirmed the development in an interview with The Mirror.

He added that Makombe will appear in court facing a charge of abuse of council property. Said Nyede:

The vehicle is now under police custody. It is an offence to remain with council property when you are no longer serving the institution.

Makombe was recalled by the Douglas Mwonzora led MDC-T for his alleged allegiance to the then Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance, now the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) director Cornelia Selipiwe recently wrote a letter to the City of Gweru seeking its response over the continued use of the council vehicle by Makombe.
