ZANU PF Holds On To Provincial Election Results

ZANU PF has failed to announce official results for the provincial elections held on Tuesday, 28 December, in spite of having pledged to release them starting mid-morning on the 29th.

NewsDay reported party sources as saying the unconfirmed results were indicating that a faction linked to President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sharing control of the 10 provinces with one aligned to Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

This comes after several candidates linked to Chiwenga were disqualified for various reasons in the run-up to the polls.

ZANU PF political commissar Mike Bimha on Thursday said some provinces were yet to send results to the party headquarters. He said:

It (releasing of results) will depend on whether we have received all the results. We are still waiting for some results which are still outstanding.

Definitely tomorrow morning (today), we are hopeful that we would have received all of them because some of the results were collated today (yesterday).

There were challenges because of the rains and some areas were not accessible, so we have to wait for everything to be in position.

We cannot announce any results when they are not all available.

Reports suggest that Mary Mliswa-Chikoka prevailed in the race for the Mashonaland West provincial chairmanship to become the first woman to lead the ruling party in a province.

Other candidates reported to have won the chairmanship include Robison Mavenyengwa (Masvingo), Kazembe Kazembe (Mashonaland Central), Jabulani Sibanda (Bulawayo), Mangaliso Ndhlovu (Matabeleland South), Godwills Masimirembwa (Harare), Albert Nyakuedzwa (Manicaland) and Richard Moyo (Matabeleland North).

In Midlands, the Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Larry Mavima, who is Mnangagwa’s alleged preferred candidate, was elected unopposed.
