We'll Honour Sirizani Batau For His Heroic Deeds - President Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the government will honour Mr Sirizani Batau who was burnt while rescuing people who were involved in an accident 20km outside Mutare on Christmas Eve.

The President made the remarks while speaking at the National Thanksgiving and Dedication Service 2021/2022 this Sunday.

Sirizani Batau, who is apparently a truck driver, has been Hospitalised after sustaining injuries during a rescue operation to retrieve people who were trapped in a Beta bus that had collided with a fuel tanker. He managed to rescue eight (8) people. Speaking in Bulawayo this Sunday, Mnangagwa said:

Let me take this opportunity to appreciate Sirizani Butau who saved people from the Mutare accident. As the government, we will honour him for his selfless sacrifice.

The accident happened on Christmas Eve after the bus driver had reportedly encroached into the lane of an oncoming fuel tanker at the 242km peg on the Harare – Mutare Road at or around 1700hrs on 24 December 2021.

A police report said the bus driver was trying to avoid running over a drunk unidentified pedestrian. 

The death toll has risen to five people while 60 others who were injured in the accident were ferried to Victoria Chitepo Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Affirmative Action Group (AAG) has announced that it will pay the school fees for a schoolgirl who recited a poem at the event up to the tertiary level.
