Parliamentarians Raise Concern Over Deportees Escaping Isolation Centres

Parliamentarians have expressed concern over deportees who are escaping from quarantine and isolation facilities.

This comes amid reports that in July and August 233 deportees escaped from NSSA Hotel in Beitbridge where they had been quarantined.

Between July 4 and 12 about 146 deportees escaped from NSSA Hotel in Beitbridge, Esikhoveni Training Centre and District Development Fund (DDF) skills training centre in Matabeleland South.

Beitbridge East Member of Parliament, Albert Nguluvhe told the Chronicle in an interview that there was a need to tighten security at the quarantine and isolation centres. He said:

As Matabeleland South Province we have a huge problem especially in Beitbridge of deportees that escape from quarantine and isolation centres. Beitbridge is an entry point for many people and already that puts the people there at risk. It even becomes worse because of people that are escaping from quarantine centres. Some of these people do this under the watchful eye because of some rogue elements within law enforcement agents.

This matter has to be looked into as it exposes not only the population of Matabeleland South only but the entire country as some of these people who escape proceed to their respective provinces. We can’t have people that are so risky moving around willy nilly.

Beitbridge West Member of Parliament, Ruth Maboyi reiterated Nguluvhe’s remarks saying quarantine centres need perimeter fences and doors locks.

Matabeleland South provincial social welfare officer, Mr Criswell Nyakudya said they had engaged law enforcement agents in order to tighten security at quarantine centres.

Most of the coronavirus cases recorded in Zimbabwe this year were community transmissions and deportees escaping from quarantine centres might have contributed, significantly.
