Family Seeks Assistance For Operation Of Baby Born With Large Hole In Heart

A Harare family is seeking financial assistance for their baby born with a large hole in the heart to be operated in India.

The family learnt during one of the mother’s pregnancy scans at Harare Central Hospital that the foetus had a congenital heart defect.

The hole in the heart which was almost one centimetre long needed to be operated on after birth.

However, an ultrasound scan conducted by one doctor three months after birth stated that the baby was no longer eligible to undergo the operation since the hole was too big.

An operation could result in the death of the baby.

The 44-year-old mother, Sakina Mukandawire, said she felt helpless because it seemed there was no solution to her child’s heart condition. She said:

When I asked the doctor if there were any other possible solutions he told me there was none and said I should just take the baby and go home and wait for God’s decision pertaining to the issue.

Mukandawire consulted with a different doctor who told her it’s possible for her now nine-month-old baby to be operated emphasising the operation has to be done soon in India before the baby’s heart changes its form.

According to a medical record sent by Indian doctors, the baby will need to complete an AV Canal repair surgery.

Mukandawire and her baby are supposed to stay 10 days in India. The approximate cost for evaluation is US$300 and the approximate cost for surgery is US$8 000-US$8 500.

Mukandawire said they cannot raise the money on their own and is now asking for well-wishers to help the family so that the baby can be operated on.
