Ex-Warriors Manager Ernest Maphepha Sibanda Has Died

Former Warriors manager and ex-Highlanders chairman Ernest “Maphepha” Sibanda has died.

Sibanda had been unwell for some time and breathed his last this morning at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo.

Veteran journalist Ezra Tshisa Sibanda announced Maphepha’s demise saying he died Tuesday morning from cancer. He said:

Ernest Sibanda a loving brother of mine, popularly known as Maphepha, Perplex, the people’s champion has gone to be with the Lord.

My brother, my pride and the Highlanders legend died at Mata Dei Hospital this morning. He has been battling cancer.

I’m so devastated and Zimbabwe has lost a true gently giant who always preached love and peace. I hope and pray the Government of Zimbabwe will declare Maphepha a national hero for the services to football and for being a true patriotic son of Zimbabwe.

Rest in Power Perplex.

At the time of his death, Ernest Maphepha Sibanda was a board member at Bulawayo City Football Club, having also previously served as chief of protocol at the now-defunct Bantu Rovers.

In his illustrious playing career, Sibanda played for top clubs Highlanders and Caps United.

Maphepha was famous for his speed, dribbling skills and goal-scoring abilities.

He was, unfortunately, one of the individuals implicated in the Asiagate scandal in which they allegedly assembled a group of Zimbabwean footballers under shady circumstances to go and participate in fixed matches.
