"Could Be Robbers" - ZRP On FAKE Notice On Looted Goods

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has distanced itself from a FAKE social media notice claiming they would require receipts of goods imported from South Africa as proof that goods were not looted.

National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told NewsDay in an interview that while ZRP condemned looting in South Africa, the message circulating on social media was not generated by ZRP. Said Nyathi:

The ZRP dismisses an article circulating on social media on looting of goods in South Africa which is accompanied by a ZRP logo. The public should take note that the ZRP has not issued this statement. In this regard, the public should ignore the false and fake message.

While we condemn looting in South Africa, communication from the ZRP will come through the usual channels.

The FAKE notice said police would require receipts of all goods coming from South Africa to prove they were not looted. Read the message:

With sad events happening in South Africa, the Zimbabwe Republic Police will not hasisate to arrest anyone who has received or in possession of stolen goods from South Africa. We strongly discourage people not to align themselves with criminals elements. If you know or suspect anyone with these goods please contact your nearest ZRP. As from the 11/07/21 receipts of goods bought in SA should be kept for verification. A criminal in South Africa is a criminal in Zimbabwe.

South Africa has been rocked by looting following violent protests over the arrest and imprisonment of former president Jacob Zuma for contempt of court.

Nyathi said police suspected it could be the work of criminals who would want to mount fake roadblocks to rob innocent people.
