Johannesburg Mayor Hospitalised For COVID-19

Johannesburg (Joburg) Mayor, Geoff Makhubo, has been hospitalised with COVID-19 complications after testing positive in late June.

The development was announced by the City of Johannesburg in a statement that was published on social media platforms. Reads the statement:

_The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Geoff Makhubo, has been hospitalised for COVID-19 complications._

_This follows a positive test result for COVID-19 late last month. The Executive Mayor will remain in hospital until his medical team is satisfied of his recovery._

_Joburg residents are urged once more to take all necessary precautions to remain safe and to avoid infection.This includes strict adherence to non-medical practices of wearing masks, sanitizing regularly and minimising movement in line with the Level 4 restrictions._

Johannesburg is South Africa’s biggest city and capital of Gauteng province which is bearing the impact of the COVID-19 third wave.

The province recently recorded over 14 000 new infections in a day.

On Friday, South Africa breached the two million COVID-19 cases mark, with a further 24 270 new infections recorded on Thursday. It is the highest ever number of new coronavirus cases the country has reported in a day.

Neighbouring countries including Zimbabwe are also grappling with the novel virus prompting governments in those countries to reimpose strict preventive measures aimed at stopping the spread of the virus.
