The Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) has increased fares by up to 100% for some distances with effect from 1 July 2021.
In an interview with The Sunday News, ZUPCO chief executive officer Mr Everisto Madangwa said the new fares were a cost-containment measure by the company. He said:
High operational costs and frequent price hikes taking place in the country has made us increase the fares to ensure the company improves service delivery as well as cushion its costs.
What the public should however note is that we do not increase our prices all the time, instead of after a period of time.
According to a public notice, passengers will now pay $60 per trip for ZUPCO buses up from $30 while the kombis are now charging $80 up from $50 for a distance of 0 to 20 kilometres, for those travelling a distance of 21 to 30 kilometres they will now pay $90 per trip for ZUPCO buses up from $45 while kombis will be charging $120 up from $90 and for a distance of 31 to 40 kilometres ZUPCO buses will now charge $110 up from $60.
ZUPCO said in some cases, passengers will be issued with more than one ticket as it seeks to clear the current stock of ticket books.

This is unfair practice by an entity like peoples company (Zupco). how can they increase the fairs by 100 percent in such economic we have.how much are people earning. Home industries and tuckshops are being demolished where people get living from .We all understand in zimbabwe we do not have industries functioning. They increase bus fairs without adquate buses.people are taking 2 to 3 hrs waiting for transport to and from work.
Zupco is correct. When it’s Zupco hiking fares you complain but shops are increasing fares bit by bit but no one complains. How do you expect it to run. If it close down due to financial problems you say, hw cn t survive wt these low fres.
Whoever the hell thinks this s right if really stupid out of their mind. This is so unfair. Government is demolishing people’s houses and now they increase fares. Everything is going up because there’s some hooligan that is busy controlling everything. This is not normal. This should stop because we have had enough. The price of everything is increasing yet the pays of the workers still remain the same. The ones at the top are living lavish lives while we are suffering at their hands. That’s pretty messed up and it’s a sign that there are a lot of idiots in this country who think that dictatorship is the way to go. Wait until it turns back. Mark my words it’s gonna backfire. Kana zvazoshata vasazoti gora gora. We have had enough. The government has proved to be a failure more times than I can count🚮 embarrassing
The same government which does not have money to increase salaries for workers,is the same government hiking bus fares by 100%. the same gvt expects essential workers to report to work more than 20days a month. where will gvt workers and all other people steal the money for transport surely????
