I Expected Chamisa To Lead By Example - Ngarivhume

Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngarivhume has said MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has let the electorate down by letting Harare City Council raze down stalls of vendors in Mbare saying he expected him to lead by example.

He made the remarks after the city fathers backed by armed police officers on Saturday last week demolished hundreds of stalls belonging to informal traders in the suburb.

The demolitions were most concentrated at the Mupedzanhamo Flea Market area but also encroached on the adjacent Magaba Home Industry. Commenting on the development, Ngarivhume said:

_What we are witnessing here is a failure by the councillors you voted in power to protect you. The councillors are supposed to stand with their people but they have allowed the bulldozers to raze down your vending stalls and your buildings._

_For this to be the focus of the council when there is sewage all over and garbage everywhere, is just ridiculous. This is the time I expected my brother (Nelson) Chamisa to lead by example and be at the forefront of confronting this Government for doing this to citizens. I am even surprised that Chamisa or his party are not here to give solidarity to the people whose working sites have been destroyed._

The city fathers have for long been fighting against the hard-to-tax informal sector.

The local government authority has also been getting immense pressure from traders in the formal sector who were complaining about the informal traders’ behaviour of invading their trading space.

The informal sector has been growing at an unparalleled rate mainly due to the lack of employment opportunities in the formal sector.
