MDC-T In Bid To Censor Phugeni

MDC-T deputy spokesperson Khalipani Phugeni was grilled by top party officials during a standing committee meeting on Wednesday over allegations of deliberately leaking sensitive information to the Press in a bid to injure the reputation of party president Douglas Mwonzora.

Phugeni is a top ally of vice-president Thokozani Khupe, who lost to Mwonzora at the party’s chaotic congress held on 27 December last year.

An official who participated in the virtual meeting told NewsDay that there was an attempt to censor Phugeni by party bigwigs. Said the official:

There was an attempt to censor Phugeni, especially his interviews on Gambakwe News (an online television station based in South Africa).

The standing committee members also accused him of leaking documents and internal party conversations to the Press.

Phugeni reportedly brushed off the accusations and accused Mwonzora of being responsible for leaking information to soil other party members’ images so that he looks good. The official added:

Phugeni asked how HStv managed to break the news of the president (Mwonzora)’s meeting at the State House when that meeting was not known by the top party leadership.

He even accused Mwonzora of leaking the document he handed over to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the Press.

Meanwhile, Phugeni refused to comment over the matter on Thursday, insisting he is a principled man who doesn’t speak to the Press about private meetings.
