Only Six People Register To Vote In May - ZEC

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) added only six people to the voters’ roll in May in Masvingo.

The Deputy Provincial Election Officer (PEO) Maxwell Ncube told TellZim that not too many people were coming to register to vote due to attitudes that make them want to register at the 11th hour. He said:

Only six people were recorded since the beginning of May; three women and three men.

Our statistics show that people are not registering and some of them end up transferring to other areas.

The major problem is that people want to do things at the last minute.

Ncube said ZEC will soon be going on outreach programmes to encourage people, especially youth and women, to vote.

A Mucheke resident, Vanessa Mashuro, told the publication that most people were not aware that the local ZEC offices were open and were registering people for the upcoming elections. She said:

People do not know where the offices are located and we usually register when they have announced that there are elections happening, and when registration centres are opened everywhere.

In March this year, ZEC Chief Elections Officer Utoile Silaigwana said the electoral boy had lifted the suspension of voter registration and some fieldwork it announced in January with effect from 1 April 2021.

The electoral activities were suspended after the government announced a hard lockdown to combat a spike in coronavirus infections soon after the festive season.
