Independence Day Fatalities In Massive Decline

The number of people who were killed in road traffic accidents on Independence Day this year was very low compared to the same period last year, police have said.

In spite of a slight rise in the number of accidents recorded this past Independence Day, compared to 2020, 2 people lost their lives compared to last year when 11 people were killed in accidents. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the nation that two (02) people died in two (02) fatal road traffic accidents which were recorded on Independence Day compared to eleven (11) people who died during the same period in the year 2020. No major fatal road accidents were recorded on the country’s highways during the holiday.

According to the statistics availed by police, the total number of road traffic accidents recorded in 2020 was 46, in 2021 the number rose to 52.

The total number of fatal road accidents fell from 5 in 2020 to 2 in 2021. Two people died on Independence Day this year down from 11 last year. The number of people injured also fell from 20 to 18. Asst Comm Nyathi added:

Police are concerned with the loss of human life on the roads and appeals to all road users to be safety conscious when driving by respecting other road users.
