Farmers Jubilant As Contract Tobacco Sales Hit US$6.20/Kg

Some farmers are jubilant as the contract selling of tobacco started on a good note with the high grade of the golden leaf fetching US$6.20 in Mashonaland Central province.

Farmers who spoke to ZBC News said the price was a motivation for them to plant the golden leaf again. One farmer said:

My stock was bought very well and one of my bales was bought at US$6.20 per kilogramme. The business proceedings will afford us to go back to the field with energy we are quite happy. The contractor is yet to communicate to us how we are going to be paid.

Contractors expressed happiness over the quality of tobacco that is being sold this season. They said:

I think is goes back to a good season characterised by good rains and we are very much impressed by the quality.

The first day in Mvurwi attracted farmers from across eight districts of Mashonaland Central province

Meanwhile, tobacco was Thursday sold at US$5.20 per kilogramme at the opening of contract sales floors in Karoi, Mashonaland West province.

Six of the authorised contractors offered prices above five United States dollars for the golden leaf, which was eventually taken at five United States dollars twenty cents per kilogramme.

The only dark spot to an otherwise eventful first day of tobacco contract sales were delays in serving farmers.

The opening bale of tobacco was yesterday sold at US$4.30/kg at the Tobacco Sales Floor in Harare which is higher than the US$4 in 2020 and is lower than US$4.50 of 2019.
