COVID-19: Govt Warns Against Complacency

The Zimbabwean government has warned the citizenry against lowering their guard in the fight against COVID-19 saying complacency will risk reversing some gains registered so far.

The warning was issued by Ministry of Health and Child Care spokesperson Mr Donald Mujiri when Zimbabwe has of late been recording very few new COVID-19 infections and deaths.

Mujiri said vaccination was no excuse for people to disregard safety precautions like wearing face masks, maintaining social distancing, using sanitisers, and washing hands. He said:

We urge everyone to adhere to the guidelines. Covid-19 is still with us and we have not yet won the fight against the virus.

We have recorded success in our response to the virus and we need to continue to be vigilant. Generally, we urge everyone to follow the guidelines so as to save everyone, your family, and friends from the virus.

Zimbabwe experienced a COVID-19 resurgence towards the end of 2020 and authorities attribute the surge in the number of new infections and deaths to complacency.

The Southern African country then imposed strict measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

It is currently vaccinating frontline workers with the aim of achieving herd or community immunity.

Since March last year, Zimbabwe has officially recorded a total of 36 341 coronavirus cases, 33 953 recovers, and 1 489 deaths.
