Khupe In First Meeting With Mwonzora Since Dramatic Ouster

Former MDC-T interim president Thokozani Khupe has demanded that the party address her concerns first before she accepts her new role.

Khupe was appointed deputy president by Douglas Mwonzora soon after the chaotic and violent MDC-T extraordinary congress (EOC) held on 27 December last year.

She said she met with Mwonzora last week for the first time since the EOC and the two discussed issues to do with violence and an illegitimate voters roll, among other issues. Online sources quoted Khupe as saying:

I can confirm that I met with Sen. Douglas Mwonzora in Harare on 18 February 2021 for the first time since 27 December 2020 Extraordinary Congress.

The following issues were discussed: Violence, illegitimate voters roll as well as inquorate EOC among others.

Illegal appointments in the standing committee which are a violation of the party Constitution. The National Council held on 6 February 2021 had no mandate to alter or amend the Constitution.

My absence in today’s press conference held at MRT was informed by the need to address the aforementioned important issues to enhance the smooth running of our great movement, MDC-T.

Meanwhile, Mwonzora told a press conference on Tuesday that he has reconciled with Khupe.

He said Khupe has accepted the post of co-vice president, following her humiliation at the EOC last year.
