MDC Alliance Suspends Two Mutare Councillors

The MDC Alliance has suspended two of its Mutare City councillors for 60 days each on allegations of misconduct after they reportedly voted an MDC-T member to the post of Mutare City Deputy Mayor.

Tsitsi Ziweya (Ward 2) and Elizabeth Tsoro (Ward 3), were suspended for violating some sections of the MDC Alliance constitution and are now awaiting a disciplinary hearing.

In letters of suspension dated 31 January, MDC Alliance Manicaland Provincial chairperson, Prosper Mutseyami wrote to the duo:

This serves to inform you that you are suspended forthwith from the MDC Alliance party for the next 60 days, pending a thorough investigation into the serious allegation regarding an act of misconduct (in particular in terms of the MDC Alliance disciplinary code of conduct and regulations (Annexure C) arising from your alleged failure to tow the MDC Alliance party position (refer to the MDC a party constitution, Article 5.6.

MDC-T’s Farai Bhiza was elected Mutare City Deputy Mayor after polling seven votes against five for MDC Alliance candidate Simon Chabuka in an election held at a special full council meeting.

Bhiza, who had earlier defected to the MDC-T, replaced recalled former MDC Alliance deputy mayor, Kudakwashe Chisango.

Meanwhile, the two suspended councillors told Zim Morning Post that they remain MDC Alliance Councillors and vowed to defend the party’s president, Nelson Chamisa.
