JOC Pressured HE Mnangagwa To Extend Lockdown
The NewsHawks have reported that the Joint Operations Command (Joc) pressured President Emmerson Mnangagwa to extend the current month-long national lockdown.
The publication reports that the Joc’s move was influenced by the recent spike in the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths in the country.
Joc comprises the military, Central Intelligence Organisation, the police and prison service and it meets weekly from district to national level, deliberating on key national security issues. Speaking to The NewsHawks, a source privy to the development said:
A recent Joc meeting proposed that the current lockdown be extended by another month. Other security organs urged the police to scale up its enforcement especially after the curfew.
It was also noted that some car sales were now operating illegal liquor outlets, and this has to be stopped.

The Acting President, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who doubles as the Minister of Health and Child Care has since extended the lockdown to 15 February 2021.
Following the recent Joc meeting, the Zimbabwe Republic Police this week ordered police stations to tighten the screws.
The police noted in a circular that some companies which are not in the category of essential services such as Bata Shoe Company, Bhola Hardware, furniture and clothing shops, are conducting business on the strength of letters issued by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and International Trade.
They said vehicles which are not in the category of essential services should not be allowed to pass a checkpoint adding that screening of deserving travellers during curfew times should be intensified.
The tightening of screws followed the death of a number of senior government officials including Sibusiso Moyo, Joel Biggie Matiza and Ellen Gwaradzimba.
