ARTUZ Urges Teachers To Boycott Marking O & A Level Exams

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) has urged teachers to boycott marking the O Level and A Level examinations because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

ARTUZ said some of their members who marked the grade 7 examinations have now succumbed to COVID-19 and even if they were hungry they have to resist temptation and wait till the situation is contained. Using microblogging site Twitter ARTUZ said:

We are mourning teachers who are dying after contracting COVID19 virus marking Grade 7 exams. This morning a teacher died at Chinhoyi hospital, he marked at Jameson in Kadoma. Now we are pushing more trs to die? This gvt is cruel! Other departments have reduced to 10%, why teachers?

We appeal to teachers to distance themselves from marking O & A level exams. Its a death trap. Some of our colleagues who marked Gr 7 exams are succumbing to Cov19. We know teachers are hungry & desperate lets resist the temptation & live to fight for better salaries.#SaveOurEducationZW

ARTUZ said other government departments have downgraded and only 10% of their staff is reporting for duty but teachers starting tomorrow are expected to congregate and mark the examinations which according to ARTUZ is not fair given the ravaging pandemic that has killed over 500 people since the turn of the new year.
