Zimbabwe COVID-19 Deaths Continue Rising

Zimbabwe is experiencing a resurgence of the coronavirus which is characterised by high numbers of new cases and deaths.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) reported that the Southern African country recorded 54 deaths on the 20th of January pushing the death toll since March 2020 to 879.

The MoHCC said the fatalities were recorded in the country’s nine (9) provinces as follows:

  • Harare  – 26
  • Mashonaland East – 9
  • Manicaland – 6
  • Bulawayo – 4
  • Mashonaland Central  – 4
  • Mashonaland West – 2
  • Midlands – 1
  • Matebeleland North – 1
  • Masvingo – 1

Meanwhile, 733 new coronavirus cases were recorded nationwide and all are local transmissions. The total number of officially known cases was as of 20 January 2021 at 29 408.

Harare recorded the highest number of cases, 242, compared to other provinces. Manicaland had the second-highest number of cases with 112.

This is happening when the country is expecting to receive the coronavirus vaccine procured under Covax between the end of January and mid-February to vaccinate the nation on a voluntary basis.
