Police Abandon Search For 4 Gweru River Accident Victims

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has abandoned the search for the bodies of four passengers still missing after an Isuzu double cab was swept off the low-level Gweru River Bridge on Sunday.

The vehicle and two bodies – the driver and a passenger – were pulled out of the river by the police sub-aqua unit and members of the Gweru Fire Brigade earlier this week.

The driver has since been identified as Tinashe Chiwawa, who was employed by Gweru City Council in the engineering department.

Chiwawa was buried yesterday in Gweru while the body of the passenger is still to be identified.

The vehicle was towing a mining compressor when it was swept off the bridge.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday told State media that an eyewitness told the police that he saw six people including the driver in the vehicle.

The eyewitness further claimed that three men got out to assess the bridge and one passenger said they carry on as the water was not deeper than the day before.
