Coronavirus Wreaks Havoc In Bulawayo, Harare

Zimbabwe recorded 1 365 new coronavirus cases and 34 deaths on the fifth of January with most of the cases and deaths recorded in Bulawayo and Harare.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health and Child Care indicated that Harare and Bulawayo, in that order, recorded 777 and 110 new coronavirus cases.

Harare also recorded 10 deaths while Bulawayo with 7 deaths had the second-highest number of fatalities.

The development was announced in a statement issued by the Ministry of Health and Child Care which also noted all the 1 365 cases recorded in the country were local cases.

This comes as the government has reimposed a strict 30-day Level IV national lockdown premised at curbing the transmission and spread of the virus.

Authorities have warned the nation against complacency saying the second wave is likely to claim more lives than the first one.

Zimbabwe has since December last year recorded a surge in the number of coronavirus cases and some attribute the spike to complacency and deliberate disregard to coronavirus preventative measures.

Meanwhile, MDC Alliance Youth Leader, Agerncy Gumbo says “COVID-19 Death toll is higher than what the Government is reporting! It’s not the deaths they are hiding, it’s the incompetence!”

His sentiments were echoed by some who said more than 10 high profile figures succumbed to COVID-19 since the first of January alone, therefore the number is likely higher for the ordinary and the poor masses who do not have access to health care systems.

Some, however, believe deaths related to the pandemic cannot be hidden.
