Zimbabwe recorded 8 coronavirus related deaths on the 2nd of January to push the death toll to 377 since the first fatality in March last year.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care revealed the development in a statement which also indicated that the country had recorded 407 new cases.

The statement also highlighted that all the 407 new cases were local. Harare recorded the most cases – 199 followed by Bulawayo with 42, Manicaland 38 and Midlands 32.

Among the measures, Chiwenga moved to close the economy ordering that only essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies and supermarkets are to remain open with only essential staff allowed to come to work.

He added that these services can only open at 8 am, must close at 3 pm and will be subject to a curfew that will start at 6 pm and end at 6 am.

These measures are being reintroduced at the backdrop of a recent surge in the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths countrywide.

Reports say most of Harare health institutions, public and private, designated for the treatment of coronavirus patients are overwhelmed and there is no room to accommodate new patients.
