Thokozani Khupe’s spokesperson, Khalipani Phugeni, has said he thinks his boss was still in charge of the opposition MDC-T even after Douglas Mwonzora was declared the winner of the Supreme Court-ordered Extraordinary Congress (EOC) held Sunday at the Harare International Conference Centre.

Phugeni added that the National Council met and reiterated its adherence to the constitution and principles of the party.

He also said the National Council also denounced the creation of a parallel voter’s roll. The NC also upholds the suspension of the EOC by the Acting President Thokozani Khupe. He added:
I think Thokozani Khupe is still in charge of the party. The party attempted to carry out an Extraordinary Congress and we all saw what happened.
He speaks when the party is divided following the chaotic congress that was meant to elect a substantive successor to the late party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai who succumbed to cancer on 14 February 2018.
Khupe stormed out of the HICC auditorium where elections were being held claiming that Mwonzora manipulating the voting process.
She later issued a statement saying she had suspended Mwonzora from the party for acting in a way that violates the party’s guiding principles. Khupe also said she had cancelled the congress in her capacity as the acting president.
Mwonzora, however, dismissed the suspension saying he cannot be suspended by a fellow candidate at the congress.
