Govt Reminds MDC-T Congress Delegates To Observe COVID-19 Protocols

The government has reminded the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T to observe all COVID-19 protocols when it holds its Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress on 27 December.

This comes after MDC-T interim secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora wrote to the Ministry of Health and Child Care asking for clearance for the gathering.

Responding to Mwonzora’s letter, the Health Ministry secretary Air Commodore Jasper Chimedza wrote:

Conditions cited in our letter dated 16 December 2020 to the Secretary-General, Senator Douglas T Mwonzora on the notification to hold the MDC (Tsvangirai) Extraordinary Congress on Saturday 19 December 2020 still apply to the new proposed date of Sunday, 27 December 2020. This is meant to comply with COVID-19 control measures adopted by our country.

The MDC-T extraordinary congress was initially slatted for 19 December but was postponed at the last moment as the party leadership failed to agree on the voters’ roll to be used.

The party had also decentralised the congress so that delegates met at different venues across the country to minimise the number of people gathered in one place.

Meanwhile, it appears as if COVID-19 protocols only apply when opposition political parties are involved as President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed hundreds of ZANU PF supporters on Wednesday after commissioning the Chombwe water project in Chivi.
