State Wants Mamombe Tried Separately From Colleagues

The State wants two MDC Alliance Activists, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova tried separately from their compatriot Joana Mamombe in a case they are accused of faking their abduction in May.

Representing the State, Prosecutor Michael Reza this Monday filed an application seeking permission to separate Chimbiri and Marova’s trial from that of Joana Mamombe.

Reza argued that the trio should be tried separately to allow Mamombe, who is not mentally fit to stand trial, to continue receiving treatment while the other two stand trial.

Regional Magistrate Bianca Makwande postponed the ruling of the state’s application to this Thursday and ordered the defense to produce Mamombe’s medical report for her ongoing treatment.

Mamombe’s doctor previously told the court that the Harare West legislator had mental issues with her lawyers arguing that as a result of her health condition, she was not fit to stand trial.

Two government doctors confirmed the report by Mamombe’s doctor and recommended that she be allowed to receive treatment.
