Kenya Set To Reopen Schools And Possibly Restructure Their Academic Calendar - Report

Kenya has revisited its decision to reopen schools in January 2021 and has revealed that leaners will be back in class on 19 October 2020, the Nation, a Kenyan Newspaper reports. Kenya had written off the 2020 academic calender and agreed schools will reopen in January before they revisited the decision and said they are now considering permanently changing their academic year to run from May/June to April.

According to the publication, writing classes in the East African nation will sit for their exams in April 2021 instead of November 2020. According to the publication:

Schools will open on October 19 while Standard Eight and Form Four learners will sit their national exams in April 2021 if the government adopts proposals by a committee appointed by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha.

As a result of the disruption on term dates, the committee also recommends that the school calendar be revised to allow the year to begin in June instead of the usual January-to-November cycle. The Sunday Nation understands that learners will not repeat classes as it had been announced earlier, but the mechanics of how that vision will be accomplished remain scanty.

The team of senior education stakeholders proposes to reorganise the academic calendar such that the second term starts in October and ends in November, and the third term starts in January and ends in March.

Many countries are struggling with the effects of the pandemic especially on their academic calenders, Zimbabwe has decided to maintain the same setting by letting exams be written in December 2020. The government is yet to make an announcement about other classes that will not be going back to school on Monday.
