5 Makorokozas Trapped Underground After Mine Shaft Collapse

5 Gold panners (Makorokoza) in Chegutu were reportedly trapped after a mine shaft they were working on collapsed and trapped them underground on Tuesday. The gold panners are still to be rescued according to New Zimbabwe.

Sources that spoke to the publication about the incident said the incident occurred at around 4.30 on Tuesday and officials from the mines ministry visited the scene on Wednesday evening to assess the situation. A source privy to the developments told the publication that:

They could not engage in any rescue efforts citing that they were not aware of the shaft plan and that it was dark,

Sources also told the publication that there were signs of life as they could hear movement underground. A rescue mission is currently underway and Chegutu Civil Protection Unit could not be reached for comment.
