MDC Alliance Nominates Former PDP Member As Gomba's Replacement To Avoid Recalls

The opposition MDC Alliance has nominated Jacob Mafume to replace ousted Harare Mayor Herbert Gomba as a way to prevent MDC-T interim leader Thokozani Khupe from recalling the party’s official.

Gomba, a former councillor for Glen Norah was recently recalled by the interim MDC-T leadership for ceasing to be a member of the MDC-T. Speaking to New Zimbabwe on Sunday, an anonymous MDC Alliance official said:

As the MDC Alliance, we still have a majority of councillors in the Harare City chambers, and anyone nominated from Khupe’s MDC-T will not get in on a silver platter.

The good thing about it is the mayor is voted for by elected councillors and Khupe’s camp will be floored.

Our candidate is Jacob Mafume who was formerly with PDP (People’s Democratic Party) and Khupe cannot recall him hence his name has been thrown in the hat.

Meanwhile, MDC-T has identified Luckson Mukunguma, a local businessman who is also the chairperson of the council’s finance committee as the successor to Gomba.

Mafume, a lawyer and former MDC Renewal spokesperson, is the chairperson of human resources.

MDC-T has in recent months recalled scores of MDC Alliance councillors and legislators for showing allegiance to Nelson Chamisa.
