MDC Yet To Be Granted Application For Extension Of Congress - Mwonzora

Interim Secretary-General of the opposition MDC-T, Senator Douglas Mwonzora has said the Supreme Court was yet to grant the application for an extension of the party’s Extraordinary Congress.

Mwonzora was responding to a question by Alex Tawanda Magaisa a law lecturer in the United Kingdom and former Chief of Staff in the office of the former Prime Minister, the late Morgan Tsvangirai.

The party was stopped from holding the court-sanctioned congress on 31 July with authorities citing the coronavirus pandemic as the hurdle. Magaisa had asked:

Did the Supreme Court grant your party an extension to the 31 July deadline for the EC (Extraordinary Congress)? … Did you get an extension? It’s a yes or no answer.

In response, Mwonzora said:

The Supreme Court is yet to grant the application for an extension Doc.

The congress was premised at electing a replacement to the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai who died in 2018.

Since his departure from the political arena, the party he founded has being submerged under a serious leadership crisis that has spilt into courts.

MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa and MDC-T interim president, Thokozani Khupe have been the main contenders for the presidential post.

Meanwhile, members of the MDC Alliance say they will not attend the congress as it has nothing to do with their party.
