Former Boxing Champion Morgan Maphosa Dies
Former Zimbabwe bantamweight champion, Morgan Maphosa had died, The Herald reports. Maphosa reportedly succumbed to cancer on Wednesday at his rural home Rava Village, in Mberengwa and he was laid to rest yesterday. Maphosa’s boxing career started in the 1980s and he won the bantamweight title in 1985 among other titles in other countries.
Maphosa’s death was confirmed by his nephew Clifford Phiri who said:
My uncle passed away on yesterday (Wednesday) at home. He returned home from Harare, some three weeks ago, complaining of a backache and he has been here where we were taking care of him.
FeedbackHe was a pillar of strength in the family.He retired from fighting around 1990/1991. He won several titles in Malawi, Zambia, the Bahamas and on home soil during his career. After he retired, he got some refereeing badges. He worked with several boxing officials.
People from the boxing fraternity-like renown referee Patrick Mukondiwa and boxing promoter Clyde Musonda said the sport was poorer without Maphosa who they described as a good fighter an inspirational being.
