U.S. Says Chin'ono, Ngarivhume's Continued Detention Is An Attack On Democracy

The United States Embassy in Harare has equated the continued detention of opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume of Transform Zimbabwe, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and many others, to an attach to democracy in the country.

The Embassy speaks when the duo has this Friday been denied bail again.

The two were arrested separately on 20 July and charged with inciting public violence after they mobilised the citizenry to participate in anti-government protests scheduled for 31 July.

The protests were convened by Ngarivhume following the exposure of grand corruption by government officials including then Health Minister, Dr Obadiah Moyo who has since been fired over the scandal. Posting on social media, the embassy said:

Denying bail and using the legal system to jail journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume, and others for exercising their rights undermines democracy and freedom of speech.
