'Kids Eat And Drink Whatever They Come Across," Harare Woman Bemoans Effects Of The Lockdown

A Harare woman, Oppah Kanongara has bemoaned the effects of the coronavirus induced lockdown saying she does not know how she would be living were it not of financial assistance from the World Food Programme (WFP).

Kanongara who is a single mother of three (3) said she used to sell her products in the city but now depends on monthly cash payment of US$ 48 from WFP after soldiers chased her down the street leaving behind everything she was selling and in light of the lockdown.

Speaking to WFP at her home in Hopley, a chaotic suburb in the south-west of Harare, Kanongara said:

I no longer have anything to sell. So I stay home, waiting for the WFP payment.

This community is not safe from COVID-19. Our kids, who are always out playing, are exposed. They eat and drink whatever they come across.

There’s only one clinic in the area. To be treated, you need to pay first. I couldn’t afford that.

The government announced when it initially imposed the lockdown in March that it would give a safety net package to the most vulnerable members of the public but it has not been forthcoming on the pledge.
