JUST IN: Chin'ono Denied Bail, Remanded In Custody

Corruption whistle-blower and Zimbabwean prominent freelance journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono has been denied bail and has been remanded in custody to August 7.

Chin’ono was arrested on Monday in connection with allegations of Contravening Section 187(1)(a) as read with section 37(1)(a)(i) of the Criminal Law [Codification and Reform] Act, Chapter 9:23, “incitement to participate in public violence’

On the same day, Jacob Ngarivhume of Transform Zimbabwe was also arrested for the same charges after the duo encouraged the members of the public to participate in the anti-corruption protests pencilled for the 31st of this month.

Chin’ono’s legal representation led by prominent lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa indicated that in denying their client bail, the Magistrate stated that he is a danger to the public because he has not yet completed his mission of inciting people to demonstrate on 31 July.

Ngarivhume was also denied bail on Thursday for the same reasons magistrate Ngoni Nduna cited as grounds for turning down Chin’ono’s freedom bid.
