Govt 'Seriously Considering' Appointing Commission To Run Harare
The government is reportedly mulling plans to appoint a commission to temporarily run the affairs of Harare City Council following Mayor Herbert Gomba and several senior officials’ recent arrests.
This follows allegations of massive corruption by council officials involving land scams and their failure to provide basic services efficiently.
The idea reportedly gained traction during a meeting between Local Government and Public Works Ministry and the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday. The Herald quoted its source as having said:
The arrest of council officials over the past weeks and that of Gomba this week has left Government pondering appointing a commission.
The city fathers are being blamed for conniving with management instead of being the watchdog.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo would neither confirm nor deny that Harare would have a commission. He said:
There are constitutional procedures that are supposed to be followed when appointing a commission and as Government, we are yet to do that.
Harare has seen commissions in the past, the latest under Sekesai Makwavarara (2006-2008) a former MDC councillor who later defected to the ruling ZANU PF party.
The Makwavarara-led commission was appointed after the then mayor, Elias Mudzuri (MDC) was fired.
