Khupe Was Naive To Embrace Chamisa's Bitter Rivals, They Are Using Her - Magaisa

MDC-T interim president Thokozani Khupe was gullible to believe that the Supreme Court ruling which put her at the helm of the original MDC was for her benefit, a political analyst has said.

United Kingdom-based academic Alex Magaisa said he almost felt pity for Khupe when she claimed to have dissolved her party which had 2 legislators and fully embraced MDC Alliance bitter losers, Douglas Mwonzora, Morgen Komichi and Elias Mudzuri.

Magaisa opined that Khupe and her allies’ frustrations were recently expressed by the party’s organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe who accused Mwonzora of acting unilaterally. Said Magaisa:

The tragedy is that Dr Khupe and the likes of Bhebhe thought the Supreme Court judgment was for them. It wasn’t. It never was. The proverbial tortoise on a lamppost who brought the case, one Mashavira, was never theirs. Its owners were at the SC with a prepared statement.

I almost sympathised with Dr Khupe when she claimed to have dissolved her party and has two MPs. My prognosis is by the end of the year, she won’t be President of any party. The biggest winners are the losers in the MDC Alliance who think they have a new home in Khupe’s MDC-T.

But their aim is to take over the leadership of the party. Mwonzora, Komichi and Mudzuri all have ambitions and will challenge Khupe. Khupe is just a useful instrument for the disgruntled men’s bid to take the leadership they lost at the MDC Alliance Congress in 2019.

The sooner Khupe wakes up to this reality, the better for her political footprint. The Supreme Court judgment certainly gave her leverage as Acting President, but that leverage is being put to maximum use by her internal rivals for their own interests. She can still recover.

A great error she can make is to think her newfound allies, who were her rivals, are batting for her side. She could have used her leverage to strike an accord with her more popular rivals at the MDC Alliance than to be an easy tool in the hands of bitter politicians.

A livid Bhebhe recently wrote a letter to Mwonzora demanding to be included in the preparations for the Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress.

Bhebhe expressed anger over the disdain shown to constitutional procedures by the self-proclaimed “constitutionalists”. Said Bhebhe:

I notice with disenchantment how your office has failed, omitted or just neglected to send me notice of sittings of the standing committee, for the entire period stretching up to this moment from the delivery of the Supreme Court judgment.

Your failure, omission or neglect to do so has and continues to prejudice the party of the checks and balances the constitution sought to strike by placing various roles in the hands of a plurality of separate individuals.
