13 More Mpilo Hospital Nurses Test Positive For Coronavirus

Thirteen (13) more nurses at Mpilo Central Hospital have tested positive for coronavirus, confirming fears that health caregivers in the country are at high risk of contracting the deadly virus.

The 13 nurses are part of the 60 cases which have been reported in Bulawayo recently. The development came after another month tested positive for the virus earlier this month triggering the testing of 197 health workers at Mpilo who were in contact with her and three patients who were positive.

The Chronicle reports that the nurses have been put on isolation while more health workers who were in contact with the 13 are yet to be tested due to test kit challenges.

This comes when the nurses have embarked on an industrial action to compel the government to pay them in United States dollars and to improve their condition of service.

Dozens of nurses reportedly deserted public health institutions since the outbreak of the pandemic citing poor remuneration and huge potential exposure to the coronavirus.

Reports suggest that some health caregivers work without adequate personal protective equipment including gloves.

This is happening at the backdrop of reports indicating that the Minister of Health, Dr Obadiah Moyo abused funds meant for the coronavirus response.
