Binga Flood Victims Living In A Sorry State, Some Of Them Are Still Living In Tents 4 Months Later - Prince Dubeko Sibanda

People whose homes and property were destroyed during the Binga floods in February are still living in tents 4 months after the floods as the government fails to provide alternative accommodation for them, according to Binga North legislator Prince Dubeko Sibanda, the Daily News reports.

Speaking to the publication, Dubeko said the flood victims were also left to fend for themselves despite losing everything in the floods that displaced them. Dubeko said:

The victims are living in a sorry state. They have even forgotten about help coming from the government because no one is talking about it now. Some have left those tents and are now staying with relatives after realising that nothing was forthcoming.

When contacted for comment Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs minister Richard Moyo said the COVID-19 pandemic had derailed the government’s plans to assist the victims:

What I know is that the villagers had their stands pegged elsewhere in preparation for their relocation, but I will have to check with the district administrator on the progress that has been made so far.

Everything would have been done in time, but unfortunately there was Covid-19, so this generally disturbed our entire plans for the affected villagers. Yes, we are aware that they are still in tents in this winter season, but I can assure you that we are working on that as government.

One person died in the floods that displaced many people in Nsungulwe village in Binga.
