Thousands More Returnees Expected

Thousands of Zimbabweans stranded in COVID-19 hit countries such as the United States, China, the United Kingdom as well as South Africa have registered with the government to be repatriated home.

This was revealed by the chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on COVID-19 Vice President Kembo Mohadi while speaking to the Midlands province COVID-19 provincial taskforce at the Zanu PF Winery Conference Centre in Gweru on Thursday.

VP Mohadi said Zimbabwe’s greatest challenge in combating the spread of the novel coronavirus was handling those coming from COVID-19 epicentres.

He said the country was putting in place mechanisms to receive all returnees without them passing on the virus to other people in the country.

However, some returnees end up absconding quarantine after the 21-day mandatory period elapses without them being released.

VP Mohadi also bemoaned the crowding of returning citizens on buses from South Africa and Botswana as this puts them at risk of infection. He said:

Our brothers and sisters in Botswana and South Africa haven’t been assisting us because sometimes we find buses with 200 people at the same time at the border and we have to look for transport, accommodation.
