Govt Denies Private Schools Request To Open Early

The government has turned down a request by Private Schools to open before the 28th of July, The Herald reports. This was revealed by the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cain Mathema in an interview with the publication after a closed-door meeting with Zimbabwe Independent Private Schools Association today. Mathema said:

The private and independent schools initiated the meeting and l was very happy. They came to present how ready they are, their state of preparedness when schools re-open. Some of the schools are even manufacturing face masks and sanitisers,

Zimbabwe Independent Private Schools Association chairperson Mrs Salome Mutsinze also spoke to the publication about the meeting and said

The agenda was to appraise the ministry on the degree of preparedness of safe reopening of our member schools in a phased approach starting with examination classes.

In line with the WHO guidelines on the fight against Covid-19 pandemic some of the highlights on safety procedures and precautions to be enforced include all staff and learners should undergo rapid testing

Several private school heads spoke to the publication and said they were ready to re-open and adhere to WHO safety guidelines to protect both teachers and learners against the virus. Schools are scheduled to open on 28 July 2020 but the government is pushing to open schools for June examinations.
