Social Welfare Grants Not Reaching Beneficiaries Because Of Data Capturing Errors - Govt

The Social Welfare Ministry is failing to distribute social grants to some beneficiaries because their details were erroneously captured in their systems and they cannot contact or locate then according to the ministry’s secretary, Clemence Matanga, Newsday reports.

Matanga said this as he was presenting oral evidence in parliament where he told a committee that was quizzing him that:

The money we are giving to the vulnerable is coming from Treasury, $2,4 billion was availed by the Ministry of Finance to cater for the vulnerable since the beginning of the lockdown.

Most of the informal sector have not been paid or received grain because the names, phone numbers and addresses we received had many errors, so the funds could not go to the targeted individuals, we are opting for biometric registration

The government announced that it would extend $600 million spread over 3 months to vulnerable people affected by the pandemic and came back a few weeks later to say the disbursements were yet to take place  after it disbursed only 1% of the $200 million it was supposed to disburse in the first month.
