English Premier League clubs will display the ‘Black Lives Matter’ badge on the front of matchday shirts alongside an NHS while player names from the backs of shirts will be replaced with ‘Black Lives Matter’ for next week’s restart.
The gesture follows worldwide protests over the death of George Floyd, an African-America who died on 25 May this year after a police officer, Derek Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes, and Floyd was declared dead shortly thereafter.
Floyd was being accused of having used a fake twenty-dollar note to buy at a to buy cigarettes at the convenience.
His death sparked outrage in the United States and around the world including in Nairobi, Kenya and Nigeria.
The Premier League resumes next week on the 17th with relegation-threatened Aston Villa hosting Sheffield United while reigning Champions, Manchester City will host Arsenal at Etihad.
The EPL, like all other leagues around the world, was suspended following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic that was first reported in China in December 2019.
When the league was suspended, Liverpool were enjoying a 25-point lead and only needed six points while a loss for Machester City and a single win for the Reds would see Klopp’s man lifting the club’s first league trophy in 30 years.
