President Mnangagwa Warns The Private Sector

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has accused privately-owned businesses of attempting to destroy the country’s currency and economic through overpricing goods and services.

President Mnangagwa told ruling ZANU PF party politburo members this Wednesday that the “elite opportunists and malcontents” who are fomenting the economic crisis will not win. He said:

On the economic front, we are witnessing a relentless attack on our currency and the economy in general through exorbitant pricing models by the private sector.

We are fully cognizant that this is a battle being fueled by our political detractors, elite opportunists and malcontents who are bent on pushing a nefarious agenda they will never win.

We did not liberate this country for selfish profiteers and greedy individuals but for all the people in our land who have a right to enjoy a better quality of life. As a party, we must always thrive to achieve this.

President Mnangagwa’s remarks come as the local currency, the Zimbabwe, dollar has plummeted in value against other currencies, with prices of basic goods and services increasing twofold in a matter of weeks.

There have been calls by various economic commentators for Zimbabwe to dump its currency and adopt the US dollar to arrest runaway inflation.
