Govt Mulls Opening Tourism Industry For The Domestic Market

The government is considering opening the tourism sector for domestic tourists as the COVID-19 induced recession threatens to sink the sector even further, The Chronicle reports.

The government is currently engaging stakeholders in the industry with the aim to capacitate the industry which drew lots of revenue from international tourists.

In an interview with the publication, Environment, Climate, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu during his visit to Victoria Falls for the engagement meeting yesterday said:

We are here for a number of reasons the main one being that we are looking at the tourism town of Victoria Falls and a number of issues as we are contemplating that sooner than later, the possibility of opening up particularly for domestic tourism.

We have developed guidelines to reopen. As you may know some hotels have started opening in Harare but we needed to have very strict guidelines because they are dealing with the public so we don’t want to be conduits for spreading Covid-19.
