"The Money Isn't Enough For Rent." - Workers Demand Restoration Of 2018 Salaries
The Apex Council, the highest body representing workers has demanded that workers be paid an equivalent of salaries they were being paid in 2018.
This comes when inflation in the country has continued to rise at an unparalleled rate resulting in the erosion of workers’ salaries.
Speaking to the Daily News on Sunday, Apex Council’s organising secretary Charles Chinosengwa said workers had agreed with the employer that their salaries would be reviewed at a quarterly basis. He said:
We are pushing for negotiations. Prices are going up every day. The money is not enough for rent.
We wrote to them last Thursday highlighting to them that we need to be paid an equivalent amount of US$550, which we were getting in October 2018.
He said they have engaged the government over the matter but they are yet to receive feedback. Meanwhile, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Paul Mavima told The Sunday Mail that government was not in a position to remunerate workers in US dollars.
